5 Minute Envelope Pillow Cover

Pinterest Challenge Complete!

I’m up to 58 pins on my DIY Projects and Craft board on Pinterest. I know that doesn’t sound like a lot to some but that is 58 items on my to-do/make list. I thought the Young House Love Pinterest Challenge was a great motivator to jump start some do-it-yourself action. I took on the challenge pretty late in the game so I needed something quick and easy. The “How to sew a pillow cover in 5-minutes” was the perfect project!!

My pin from apartmenttherapy.com

And below is my version.

It took me just under 10 minutes because I had to keep my eye on a 12 month old (who has mastered climbing into her walker only to get stuck trying to get out) but it was still pretty darn fast! How is that for a quick and easy way to update your décor!

Materials Needed:

  • Fabric (the fabric I used was from Michaels)
  • Thread
  • Measuring tape
  • Sewing Machine

Steps to Complete:

  1. Measure and cut your fabric.
    • Length – (Pillow size x 2) + 4 inches. My pillow was 12 inches so I made the length of my fabric 28 inches. Measuring the fabric twice the length of the pillow helps you avoid having to sew all 4 sides together. This way you will only have to sew the two shorter sides (in this case the width).
    • Width – (Pillow width + 2). For example – if your pillow is 10 inches wide cut the fabric to be 12 inches.
  2. Fold the edge of the shorter side (the width) over and hem the fold about a quarter inch.
  3. Have the outer sides facing in also known as right sides facing each other.
  4. Overlap the shorter sides you hemmed (see below).

Right sides are facing each other and shorter sides are hemmed and overlapped.

  5. Sew the top and bottom of the longer sides about a quarter inch from the edge.
  6. Turn the pillow right side out.
  7. Stuff your pillow inside the cover.

All Done!!! I hope you found that easy and helpful! Let me know if you have any question.

I’ve been needing/wanting new decorative pillows. Instead of going out and buying more, this definitely encourages me to just make new covers for the ones that I own now. I also am in the process of wanting to learn how to sew, so why not take on a (hopefully) easy project like this!? Thanks!
