Office Design and Decorating Ideas

After painting the office a couple of weeks ago, I have been excited about getting the rest of the space complete so we can fully utilize and enjoy the space! We had a floor plan for the room, however, after giving it more thought. I’ve decided that I didn’t want to work with what we have but instead create a space we really wanted {to avoid redoing it 12 months from now}. I’m counting on offsetting some of the expense by selling our current desk, TV stand and bookcase.

I’ve been pinning ideas on Pinterest, clipping magazine/catalog pictures and snapping Iphone photo left and right. This weekend I spent some time trying to put it all together so we could get a better idea of the pieces we need to buy.

What I love about the room? I love the sliding french door and new paint color. Of course I love the white trim and dark floors, but we have that in every room.

What we want to do/change:

  • Improve the lighting
  • Get a narrower desk to help open up the room
  • Replace our TV stand with a wall unit that has shelves or cabinets (for more storage)
  • Purchase a sleeper sofa that can accommodate 2 people and is less than 65 inches wide
  • Install wall shelving storage over the desk
  • Purchase a coffee table or end table that can double as a filing cabinet

This is what I’ve come up with.

Looking back at the design, I should have probably started with the paint color {oh well- lesson learned – I seem a lot of these}!

  1. Ikea Hemnes TV stand with a bridging shelf and 2 bookcases, however, I haven’t decided between the grey brown (currently my first choice because it looks antique-y), white or the brown-black. This will take up about 3/4 of the wall space but is narrower than what we have today.
  2. DIY artwork for the room – either lyrics from a song {maybe our first or last dance song from our wedding} or a quote?
  3. West Elm shell chandelier – this is where my husband disagrees with my plan. First of all, it’s too ‘girlie’. I knew that would be his response going into it but I also knew I couldn’t get this light fixture in any other room. Second, my husband thinks it will hang too low. The one that he would prefer has cleaner lines (more our style) and can be attached pretty close to the ceiling. It’s from Lowes. The price is comparable. The shell chandy is about $25 more.
  4. To help manage costs and to get the look I want, I plan to DIY this desk with wood, stain and legs from Ikea. I like the driftwood look.
  5. This image in the moodboard is just a placeholder, I’ll take what ever I can get that is cheap. I want to use it as a filing cabinet but we need to make sure we still have room to open the closet door so it needs to be a narrow piece. Below is another side table from TJMaxx.
The alternative is to use a chest as a coffee table which would also act as a filing cabinet (as seen in Our 2012 Home Goals post).
  6. I’ve been eying this loveseat sleeper sofa from Ballard’s Design in a white or linen color.  I’m kicking myself because I had a 15% off coupon that expired 12/31/11. I’m still looking for one for less.
  7. These are just pillow ideas. The grey origami pillow is from West Elm. The other images are Dwell Studio fabric samples. This will depend on the color of the couch, furniture and whether or not we keep our current rug.
  8. Plants from Ikea. I’ve already purchased these. Now I just need somewhere to put them! They are artificial but not obvious.
  9. This is currently an optional piece from Ballard’s Design. I’m not sure we will have room for this bookshelf so it will be one of the last items to consider. I selected this one because I like the open shelving. That said it’s pricey so I’m looking for a cheaper alternative. We may have to try to make this.
  10. The wall color we selected was Woodlawn Blue from Benjamin Moore. You can read more about it here and here.
  11. I’d like to add shelves above the desk. The image above is just one idea. Below is another shelving idea I’m considering. The office is a friend of a friend’s – isn’t it adorable!?! Ikea fans may recognize these popular shelves.
  12. Currently we have this Ikea rug in our office. It was only $19.99 and our family (i.e. dog) is rough on rugs so I avoid spending too much on them. I’m not sure if we are going to keep this. I may decide to trade it in for a lighter color once we get everything else in the room. That and I’ve been wanting to stencil a rug so this may be an opportunity

The room is about 10ft x 12 ft but there is a small hall to our bedroom so it’s not a perfect rectangle. I’m hoping we aren’t trying to squeeze to much in there. This is where the items would go.

So, what do you think? I’d love any suggestions you have on the lighting, wall unit color or anything for that matter!! Thanks for visiting!

I’ve been trying to figure out what to do in our now-shared home office space – a little masculine, a little feminine. Your ideas are fab and you’ve given everything so much thought. Can’t wait to see the end result; thanks for the inspiration.

Hi there….you did a great job. Not sure YET where you find the time or energy. I am for the more modern lamp and not the shell in this area…sorry. Let us know your decision…thanks for sharing…Sue

Love is put high above by many people and rightfully so. Perhaps they no longer
love you, but how do you feel for them. In 1928, Sir
Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin, known as a miracle drug, an antibiotic taken from orange mold.
