Mantel reFRESH

Yes, I know it’s too early for spring so let’s just say I’m getting a head start and I’m using Valentine’s day as my excuse. I don’t usually decorate for Valentine’s day because I’m not a big fan of red, or hearts or roses BUT I’ve been very inspired and invigorated with the springlike weather and the all the v-day desserts and decor being promoted on other blogs!! So, while I haven’t been struck by cupid’s arrow, I’m ready for a change!

My mantel refresh just kind of came together without much thought or planning, however, I’m pleasantly surprised at the way it turned out! I’m not sure if it’s the colors or that I made most of the items or if it’s how thrifty it was that makes me smile but I smile when I walk by.

The wreath is something I pinned on Pinterest months ago but was waiting for the right time or season. It seemed like a great centerpiece for a V-day/Easter/Spring display!! {Wreath tutorial}

I have wanted to do several different kinds of frame galleries throughout our house including an open frame display. The mantel seemed like a perfect place to try this out since I change this out a few times of a year. For that reason, I used 3M strips to attach the frames to the wall to avoid having to patch and paint holes.

I used a combination of frames I had on hand and frames I purchased at Michael’s (on sale or with a coupon of course). I painted the non-ribbon hanging frames because they were gold, black or brown before. I tried my hand at aging them but I completely cheated. I didn’t have the patience to follow any of the tutorials I reviewed online so I skipped several steps. I plan to share what I did for anyone that is interested in cutting corners and is OK with imperfection.

For the two ‘closed’ frames (meaning the back was attached and too nice to cut off), I created a few images using Microsoft Word.

The grey background alphabet art was a custom size for my frame but I made a 5×7 that you can download here.

I can’t find the Keep Calm and Love On I created but I found one online here.

The heart ornament is a do-it-yourself project that only cost me $1 and 10-15 minutes (I had most of the supplies on hand). You can read more about it here.

The L.O.V.E. monogrammed coffee mugs were a project I did late last year. My husband and I have our own favorite mismatched coffee mugs that we use so these were just sitting in the cabinet. I dusted these off and gave them a new purpose! The flowers were two inexpensive bouquets ($4.00 total) from Michael’s that I divided into four.

The Tuscan urn is an old purchase from Potterybarn. I added a few silk flowers. These were 40% of at Michael’s but even then they cost $15 so I used the sticks I collected for my Fall mantel to make the floral arrangement appear fuller. I used hydrangeas to form a collar around the urn and then inserted a few flowering branches.

The decor seemed off balance so I added a vase filled with conversation hearts and a candle. (Conversation Hearts $3, vase and candle I had)

I think that covers it! Please let me know if you have any questions or feedback!! I always love to hear from you!
