One Year of Blogging!?!?

Today I'm celebrating my blog anniversary. I'm not sure which surprises me more that I actually started a blog or that I've been blogging for a year.

unknown

A couple of years ago, I didn't even know what a blog was and now it's one of my favorite hobbies. Of course my husband might call it an obsession but that’s because he sees all the ‘behind the scenes’- the brainstorming (Pinterest pins, magazine clippings, notes in my notebook, article printouts), supplies everywhere, all the photos I take (I have 1500 pics on my camera many that will never make it to the blog), researching tutorials, writing and editing blog posts, etc. My friend, Britt, warned me it’s like a full time job and she’s right only you don’t get paid! But I love it!! And I'm so glad I took the plunge and clicked publish a year ago today.

How it started?

I first started with an online journal when I was pregnant with Lily. It was a simple Shutterfly Share site. It was a way to share the pregnancy and our renovations with my family that is spread across the country. Right about the time Lily was born and we moved from renovating to decorating, I discovered other people’s blogs. Young House Love was my first and favorite.

Several months of me stalking YHL and my husband stalking runners blogs we decided to team up and start our own. We weren’t sure how we’d make it work because we had very different interests and intentions and within a month Walt started his own blog and I assumed this one. I moved the blog to be self-hosted and purchased a domain name which was literally first thing that came to my mind. I always planned on finding something more creative (still working on that one).

Why do I do it? What do I love about?

While I’d like to find a better name for the blog, I struggle because the focus is so broad. I’m a little all over the place but that’s kind of me in real life.

I still see this as my share site. It’s:

  • a place where I can document my children’s growth and share their adventures with my family,
  • a place where I can jot down and prioritize all the decorating ideas swirling around in my head (that my husband doesn’t care to hear about),
  • a place to share my before and after projects that I’m proud of and lessons learned from those that didn’t go as planned,
  • a place to meet new people and to get feedback from others that share in my interest,
  • a creative outlet from the {male dominated} business environment I work in,
  • a place where I can set goals, track progress and hold myself accountable,
  • a place where my children can go to recount memories and learn a little about their mommy (I've caught Jacob already doing this on his Nook) and hopefully,
  • a place where I can inspire others to tap their creativity and tackle a project or two they have been putting off.

via

For all those reasons, I love it! Yes, there are times I don’t feel like writing a post or editing photos but I also want to make sure I capture that family moment or milestone while it’s fresh so I do it. I look back at posts from last summer and can’t believe how much the children have grown or how much thinner I was pre-pregnancy (even though I didn’t think so back then).

The Things I’ve Learned (and Shared) During My First Year of Blogging

  • I’ve learned I’m not that great with technology and I should always ask my husband before I spend hours trying to figure it out myself {all while threatening to throw the computer out the window}.
  • I’ve learned about plug-ins, widgets, and a little bit about html. Speaking of…did you notice the new grab button on the ride side – I did that!!!
  • I’ve learned not only what a SLR camera is but how to use it and how to shoot photos using manual settings {this has become a new passion}.
  • I’ve learned to use photo editing tools (other than Snapfish and Shutterfly) and I’ve even been able to share some fun photo editing tips.
  • Since I started the What I Wore category, I’ve learned a little more about fashion {how to dress your body type and what colors are best for me}.
  • I’ve learned that planning and preparation (and patience) are key to a project and that it is almost always why things don’t turn out as I expect.
  • I learned about and became obsessed with Pinterest!!
  • And one of the most important things I re-learned is a quote on the necklace my husband gave me a couple of years ago for Mother’s Day…

I've learned it's not about blog stats and how many people may or may not be reading my blog {don't get me wrong I do pay attention and I love, love, love reading comments} but it's about enjoying the everyday moments in life with my family. Time flies and it's important to embrace each day and make the most of it!

To quote Charles Buxton, "You will never find time for anything. If you want time you must make it."

What Are My Goals for Year Two?

A top goal for my second year of blogging is to hold true to the following…

Also..

  • To take the time to plan projects and avoid timely mistakes and rework
  • To enhance my photography skills (hence the new photography section – that is still blank)
  • To overcome my fear of Photoshop
  • To get in front of the camera on occasion
  • To continue to try new recipes (my son is starting to think I'm a decent cook)
  • To give social media a try

I think that is a good start for now.smiley

Thank you for your support and encouragement!  Your comments are a great inspiration! I sincerely appreciate you spending a little bit of your day with me!!

Cheers!

My dearest one and only “some random guy”. I love you more than words can say! I know the blog drives you crazy at times (particularly all my questions on which photo you think looks better or why the heck something on the site isn’t working) but I appreciate your tolerance and all your support!! I wouldn’t have started this without you! Thank you for your patience and understanding! And thank you so much for making a point to visit and post a comment today!

      Much love,
      Your better half :)
