Tween Bedroom Progress Update

Back in February, I listed Jacob’s bedroom furniture on Craigslist and it sold immediately. I didn’t expect it to sell so quickly so I hurriedly designed a makeover plan for his tween room. I had a few ideas but I worked with Jacob to tweak the plan and make it more “his”. All while compromising on storage solutions that would help Jacob keep his room tidy.

Original Design Plan

The bed was delayed but it finally arrived a couple of weeks ago.  Lily, a DIYer in the making, helped Walt put it together. She was all over the place. I love the photos her with her shirt over the head like she can't take it anymore and I'm not sure what she was thinking when she was doing the downward dog pose?

Originally I’d plan to purchase, paint and stack these cool Ikea metal lockers in place of a dresser

but while at Ikea, with my friend Britt, we noticed that the lockers didn’t have a handle and required a key to open them. That just spelled disaster for a child that loses the remote control to his ceiling fan several times a week. On to plan B, only I didn’t have a plan B.

Britt came to the rescue by spotting a discontinued dresser (similar to the picture below but with 4 drawers) that was on super discount!

It is spacious enough for all his clothing and affordable! I still may paint it but I’m waiting to see how it all together first.

For those that haven't seen the appalling mess, here is a picture of what his room looked like before redesigning but after we sold his furniture. Yes, I know it's embarassing! The chalkboard wall was a Christmas surprise.

Here is a quick peak of his room makeover in progress!! We still have a long list of things to do but the core pieces (bed, dresser and desk) are established!

Next on the list is to paint and move that chest to the nursery (we would have sold that with his furniture but Jacob graffitied the top) and sell his old desk to make room for a small sofa bed and TV/gaming stand. We know that the pieces will fit but we are still working through the best furniture placement.

His old desk area is across from his bed… We will either put the dresser here or the sofa bed or the tv cabinet???

Other to-do items

  • Install Curtains
  • Add Wall shelves
  • Hang Hooks for hats, jackets and book bags
  • Install closet organization system to accommodate sporting goods and gear
  • Create/purchase and hang personalized wall art
  • And maybe new bedding?

Slowly it’s coming together but I’m enjoying the transformation already! I can actually walk into his room without tripping over something.

It may surprise people to know that the before photo is actually what Jacob considers a clean room.
