DIY Flower Wreath Made of Hearts

I saw this heart wreath featured on the Lettered Cottage ezine months ago and pinned it on Pinterest waiting for the right occasion. I’d say Valentine’s day is a great time to create a heart/flower wreath. What I especially love about this wreath is that even though it’s made of hearts it doesn’t scream Valentine’s Day so you can keep it up for other occasions. 

Much like the swirly felt wreath I made in the Fall, this was another project that I really enjoyed! Maybe because it was girlie and I’m more girlie than I realize. Anyway, if you’d like to give this a try, I’ve included the materials and instructions I used below and at the end of the post I link you to my inspiration for other options or ideas.

To make this wreath you need:

• A 12 inch Styrofoam wreath
• Scrap paper (or old magazines would work) – I used this adorable patchwork scrapbook paper I found at Michael’s. It’s regularly $0.59 a sheet but it was on sale 5/$1.
• Glue (I used Elmer’s and hot glue gun)
• Buttons or brads – I purchased a pack of brads for $2.99. Pennies are another less expensive alternative (as is or painted).
• A large heart hole punch (Ideally you want a 2 to 2 1/2 inch punch but I was only able to find a 1 inch punch – as an inexpensive alternative you can use a heart template and scissors). I included a template below you can use.

• Newspaper (or something neutral to cover the wreath). I used the paper stores wrap breakable items in since I had some from a recent shopping trip. You can use a ribbon but that’s an expensive alternative since the wreath should be covered and you shouldn’t be able to see it.

Steps:

I had some pre-work that you shouldn’t have but I’ll fill you in just in case. I had what I would consider a medium heart hole punch. As a result, my flowers would not cover the wreath so I had to trim my wreath (make it skinny). I simply used a kitchen knife and trimmed the edges.

1. Wrap the wreath in newspaper/paper.
2. Punch 50-75 hearts. This depends on the size of your heart punch. My hearts were about 1 inch to 1 1/2 inches so I needed 75 hearts to cover my wreath. The bigger the heart punch the less hearts you will need. 
3. Fold your hearts in half. This gives the flowers dimensions.
4. Glue a cluster of 5 hearts together to form a flower. Because I had brads, I ended up poking the brad through each heart and not gluing them about halfway through. The concept is the same just executed a little differently. 
5. Glue the brad or penny to the newly formed flower. 
6. Attach the flowers to the wreath.
   

And that’s a wrap! Your wreath is complete and ready to adorn a bright and cheery space! Be sure to take a look at the rest of the mantel decor where this wreath resides!
